I love the idea of adding friction to your life, in this world of convenience. I have been trying to do the same, in little ways. It adds up to feeling a little more human.

right? I feel very human when I use cash to pay for groceries, or ask directions instead of using my phone to find the place I want to go. it really is in the little things, I believe.

I am so happy i found you on here, i feel like you understand me and write exactly my thought, except in much sophisticated and better worded way. I loved the part where you mentioned the movie Wall-e, because i have been thinking about it lately, and it terrifies me... I don't want my creativity to be replaced by a machine, so I can live in a loop. I want to experience something new everyday, something that's not written by the rules of society, but something that happened to me and made me realise it's beautiful to just live and be still.

omg Teona, I loved your comment so much! because that's what this text is all about, I believe. us finding that want to live that's bigger then the will to scroll.

I really agree! It can be a bit scary sometimes, to go into unfamiliar places where people can talk to me and maybe I'll feel a little uncomfortable because I am observed while I might take too long to decide, or whatever, but like you say, that is the friction, and it is rewarding to have the new experiences, speak to new people, learn about places I haven't been to before. Often it does become a positive experience when I go. And if not, it's - like I believe the ultra sports people like to call - type 2 fun: something that's fun in hindsight :)

omg, yes! that's it... and even though it's not positive in the end, I feel like there's something to learn there, maybe just about ourselves and what we don't like in an outing/event/experience, you know?

Maki, I just found you and this post (via the hyperconvenience one) and at exactly the moment I needed it. I’ve become quite the hermit since the pandemic. I used to be like you, always out and about, never really home alone. I’m moving to a new country soon, too, and I was just talking to my wife about how I’m nervous I’m going to take my hermit habits with me and just be a lonely shut-in forever and that’s not what I want. I’ve been so scared to be in the world, so paralyzed by the idea of leaving my house. And so tired all the time. I’m so scared I’m just going to be tired and lonely and not have a social life or find meaningful work again. And then you just gave me the answer. Friction. Inconvenience. I’m always happier when I make a meal than when I order in. I’m happier when I go out to the movies than when I stay home and watch one on the couch. Going to a new coffee shop instead of making instant stuff at home. All of it is better with the friction. Thank you for shining a light on this. Also, if I helps, I have been Amazon-free for about 5 months now. It’s possible! And I highly recommend it.

omg, Lee, I felt your comment down to my bones. thank you so much for sharing you view on this. I really hope this helps and trust me, I know well the fear of taking you 'hermit habits' with you to a new life. I really hope you can find it in you to fight the current and creat a beautiful life for you (and your wife!) in a new home.

(thank you for the amazon comment as well! it really encourages me in that direction!)

Thanks for writing this - could not agree more. I've been thinking a lot about our culture of (hyper)convenience lately and who it is actually benefitting in the end. Proud of you for sucking it up and going to the library!

I think that's such an important question: who is it actually benefitting? because the truth is: we already now the answer - and avoid looking at it because we don't like it.

(and thank you!!)
