thank you for this post, maki! it is so relevant. i recently got a filofax as my primary planning companion instead of google calendar, i've been commonplacing in my regular journal (idk, i feel its interesting to observe my notes on book/tv/movies next to whatever was already on my mind that day). i ~will~ say that i use my phone notes as drop a thought i want to expand on in my journal later when pulling out my physical journal is socially awkward. anyways, love this post, very wellitimed for me. Thank you <3
i love your methods! and don't get me wrong, I eventually write something down in a chat I have with myself on whatsapp because I agree - having a full planner or bujo with you at all times can be awkward, but I believe that if we make most of it by hand, we're good!
Oooh, I had been waiting for this one! Loved it, especially the fact that apps are designed for a feedback loop. No app is designed for you to leave it (except for Hinge, which had a really great ad campaign about how it’s designed a as a dating app to be deleted).
An article about bullet journaling would be cool. I tried having one before (or twice), but I got frustrated because, God forbid, it wasn’t ✨visually appealing✨.
right? and you know what else gets me? the 'streak' and the notifications that says 'you're about to lose your streak' (yes, I'm talking to you Duolingo!). it's made to keep you there, interacting, even if the thing itself lost its meaning.
your substack is rlly making me wanna get back into bullet journaling! i stopped using it bc it was so unhelpful in terms of planning out homework and tasks but i love collecting my thoughts and goals i a visually appealing way. i might pick it up again and leave behind the productivity part and focus on the journaling and reflection :)
Thank you for your perspective! I’ve always enjoyed my phone for connecting with others online, because my real-life network was a bit limited when younger. However, I have felt the need to set limits on its usage physically in my phone settings to ensure I do not stay hooked. It’s a strange thing not remembering what I just looked at, because I was never interested but merely distracted.
I love how you create friction between yourself and life’s pleasantries. Reading that for me was showing the value we place in what we have and when we have it. We can easily get anything these days, but we do not treasure and care for it the same imo.
As a person with much anxiety and a mind that is constantly displeased, I am excited to try some of these tips to slow down offline🌷
im completely with you on this. i thank my paranoia on this one because it seems like an unhealthy codependent relationship with no reciprocity. not to mention the privacy breach that comes with it. it reminds me of the lawsuit against that one period tracking app which claim mentioned that they shared users' sensitive data, like details around periods and sex lives. not for me thankyou

DO IT! I'm so passionate about it because I believe it's an awesome organization method and a creative outlet all in one!
